In October 2020 we released an update to unify the ESL World Ranking during the online era of Counter Strike. This was aimed to reevaluate and make changes to the mechanics of how all competitions are classified and therefore how much they contribute to a team’s standing within the ESL WR.

This ranking update corrects an error that appeared with the introduction of the new “Covid-19 online” ranking.

What was the error?

The error impacted tournaments which had more than one region and it affected only tournament size (XS – S – M – L – XL). Tournament size is one of the factors determining how many points a tournament gives (others being the quality of the teams present, online / LAN, etc.).

This resulted in the size evaluation of those tournaments being too low in some cases.  This occurred because the lowest rank of a team in the previous World Ranking that were considered relevant for the evaluation was based on the value of the largest included region (EU = 16) instead of the combination of regions (EU+CIS = 24). So in these tournaments, whenever teams ranked 17-24 in those regions took part, they were not adding to the size value of the tournament, only 1-16 did.

The size rating of the four tournaments below was retrospectively upgraded, meaning that the teams in those tournaments should have received more ranking points. Additional tournaments were also added, but due to the points decay, they are valued at 0% today and thus have no direct impact on today’s update.

  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 3: XS→ S
  • LOOT.BET/CS Season 6: XS → S
  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 8: XS → S
  • DreamHack Masters Winter 2020: Europe: M → L

Due to the change of the mechanics, below 12 tournaments have been added into today’s update.  They were previously not included and while some of these tournaments have had some points decay, they still factor in on today’s update.

  • Eden Arena: Malta Vibes – Week 1
  • Nine to Five #2
  • Eden Arena: Malta Vibes – Week 8
  • Nine to Five #3
  • Eden Arena: Malta Vibes – Week 9
  • Eden Arena: Malta Vibes – Week 10
  • LOOT.BET/CS Season 7
  • Nine to Five #4
  • Nine to Five #5
  • LOOT.BET/CS Season 8
  • Nine to Five #6
  • DreamHack Open November 2020

Six tournaments were also added (they have decayed to 0% influence already, but the points won in those tournaments influenced the valuation of subsequent tournaments in the ranking).

  • Flashpoint Season 1
  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 2
  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 4
  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 5
  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 6
  • #HomeSweetHome: Week 7

We understand that the recent error could have had some impact on recent tournaments. This is unfortunately something we are unable to retroactively correct however going forward we can confirm that the ranking is fixed and 100% correct.

What was the outcome relative to teams?

Liquid Take Lead for 2nd Intel Grand Slam https://esl.com/pl/article/liquid-take-lead-for-2nd-intel-grand-slam/ Tue, 07 May 2019 07:16:36 +0000 https://intelgrandslam.eslgaming.com/?p=697 Liquid have won the Intel Extreme Masters Sydney championship and are now in the race to the Intel Grand Slam. The world’s #2 ranked team is now level with Astralis for the number of eligible trophies and has more time to win their 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

The North American lineup defeated Fnatic in a long, drawn out grand final in Australia, beating the Swedes 3-2. In spite of being ranked #2 for months, Liquid have not won a big trophy with their current team, securing a number of second places in 2018.

The IEM Sydney champions are now looking to make use of Astralis’ absence from a number of announced events to go ahead of the Danes in the race. The next eligible championship will be DreamHack Masters Dallas in June, Astralis won’t be in attendance.

If Liquid win on their home soil in Dallas, Astralis will be a trophy behind at the ESL Pro League finals in France. The race is starting to heat up.

Astralis remain invincible in Katowice https://esl.com/pl/article/iem-13-katowice-major/ Mon, 11 Mar 2019 13:00:20 +0000 https://intelgrandslam.eslgaming.com/?p=688 Defeating the Finns from ENCE 2-0 in the grand final of the Intel Extreme Masters Katowice Major, Astralis have won the first Intel Grand Slam eligible event of the new season and overall their third IGS-eligible event overall.

Across the tournament in Poland, the Danes beat compLexity, Cloud9, Renegades, Ninjas in Pyjamas and Made in Brazil before outclassing the Finnish underdogs.

In the current form Astralis is in, the question seems not if but when they complete their second Intel Grand Slam.

No true contender seems to be out there looking like they could challenge Astralis in the race. FaZe Clan have not improved after replacing Finn “Karrigan” Andersen. TeamLiquid were supposed to be the team to do challenge, but in Katowice they lost to ENCE in the first round of the playoffs. Natus Vincere remain dangerous with Sasha “s1mple” Kostyliev, but not nearly consistent enough. Both of those teams were knocked out by ENCE.

Looking at Katowice results, only Made in Brazil showed signs of progress. With the same core lineup that brought them their previous peak, the Brazilians might be the first team to try to dethrone Astralis, but still not many would bet on it today.

After winning in Katowice, the Danes have nine more events to win their second, third and four eligible title. The earliest it could happen would be on July 7th, 2019, if the Danes win IEM Sydney, DreamHack Masters Dallas and ESL One Cologne.

The next stop is Intel Extreme Masters Sydney on May 3-5, 2019. Don’t miss it!

The Intel Extreme Masters Shanghai 2018 captivated the audience in attendance at the ChinaJoy gaming exhibition (the largest in China and Asia) courtesy of NRG’s flawless gameplay en route to the title and the heroics of local outfit TyLoo.

TyLoo’s Chinese/Indonesian comp had a nail-biter of a semi-final against the experienced Virtus.pro, but managed to come out on top after a dramatic double overtime finish. Champions NRG were dominant throughout the event, only losing one match in the whole tournament and will now turn their attention to ESL One New York 2018, where they will face some of the best CS:GO teams on Earth.
