One of these people is Meruna – a judge at last year’s ESL One Frankfurt cosplay competition who this year will be switching places and being judged herself. We talked to her about her hobby, judging experience and ESL One Frankfurt itself.

ESL: Hello, Meruna! Can you tell us how your adventure with cosplay began?

Meruna: I just thought about this recently and wow, I don’t remember. Some time after my first visit to Games Convention in 2008, I started following a young and very talented cosplayer on her blog on a German anime page. Today she is one of the – if not the – most well-known German cosplayers out there. After reading her blog and tutorials for a while, I decided I wanted to try it out myself! My first costume was the Seraphim from Sacred 2, which I wore at gamescom 2010.

My current cosplay ‘career’ highlight was probably when I cosplayed Midna from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess at gamescom 2011 and I was interviewed by the official Nintendo Wii channel because they liked my costume so much.

ESL: When did you first get into Dota?

Meruna: I got introduced to Dota by my first boyfriend some time around 2008. I thought “This looks easy” and challenged him to a 1v1 at our friend’s next LAN party and ended up winning even though I bought Vladimir’s Offering on Drow (“life steal” sounded fancy!). In 2011 I saw The International at gamescom and have been following the competitive Dota 2 scene ever since.

ESL: Who is your favourite Dota 2 character and why?

Meruna: Enchantress! I love the aggressive jungling and she’s so lively. My favourite hero in Dota was Viper, but I don’t like his voice work that much in Dota 2.

ESL: What is your fondest memory from last year’s ESL One Frankfurt?

Meruna: The entire event was amazing, but so was the after show party. Dendi unfortunately didn’t want to dance with me but it was great nevertheless. I recommend everyone goes there if there are still tickets available!

ESL: How did you end up on the judging panel at last year’s ESL One Frankfurt?

Meruna: As some people know, my boyfriend was working at the last ESL One Frankfurt. That made it easy for me to contact Turtle Entertainment and ask if they needed any help. I love helping out if I can! I heard what they had planned so far and then offered my help with judging.

ESL: Can you give us some insight into the judging process at the ESL One Frankfurt cosplay competition? How does it feel to be a judge and what sort of things do you pay attention to when evaluating a costume?

Meruna: Last year’s judges were a representative from ESL, workshop artist Anuxi and myself. The rating sheet I developed was based on the sheets used by other German cosplay competitions and takes the overall appearance into account as well as the smaller categories: crafting, sewing, makeup and wig, resemblance to the character and effort. Effort is a very important point as, in my opinion, if two costumes are on the same level craft-wise, the one that has more armour pieces, a more complex design and more details should be rated higher.Having this pretty elaborate rating sheet makes it much easier to judge fairly in comparison with just trying to rank cosplayers or rating them on a scale of one to ten.

ESL: What made you decide to switch roles this year and be a competitor as opposed to a judge?

Meruna: Due to a lack of cosplay partners, I had taken a break from cosplay for a few years – I still followed the scene and my favourite cosplayers and read up on techniques but wasn’t crafting myself. However, last year’s contest inspired me to pick up the hobby again! I am super excited to compete and have my skills compared with those of others.

ESL: Tell us about the costume you’re preparing for this year’s event.

Meruna: The costume I am bringing is Vengeful Spirit’s Vestments of the Fallen Princess set by The Lannisters. Right after ESL One Frankfurt 2014 was over, I was so inspired and motivated to start again that I looked at a lot of different female heroes’ sets. This particular set just caught my eye and I wasn’t able to get it off my mind for days. I started in August and invested all my spare time and a few hundred euros on it and finished just in time for DreamHack Winter, which took place at the end of November. Unfortunately, I didn’t win a prize in the competition there – better luck next time, right? In preparation for ESL One Frankfurt 2015 I’ve made some adjustments, improved my attachments and remade and repainted some parts.

ESL: Why did you pick this particular character? Do you think you share any particular traits with them?

Meruna: I have to be honest and say I picked her solely because of the great custom set – I like how it changed Vengeful to more of a ‘lady’ with long hair. Of course I like playing her (I am more of a support player), but so far I don’t have any plans to murder my sister or her boyfriend

ESL: What are you looking forward to the most at ESL One Frankfurt 2015?

Meruna: Since the Sunday happens to be my birthday, I invited part of my family to come to ESL One Frankfurt. They are not into video games and cosplay at all, but I would like them to see me and the whole event to get a better understanding of what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. Of course I also look forward to meeting any other attendees excited about cosplay! It’s really the people that make a good event great.

ESL: Which team are you going to be supporting in Frankfurt and why? Do you think they have what it takes to take first place?

Meruna: I am an unfortunate member of the Team Secret bandwagon – Puppey all the way! I mainly follow teams whose players I like – sadly NiP, Tinker nor Na’Vi managed to qualify. Since Secret is on a roll these days, winning the Red Bull tournament and The Summit 3, I hope they can keep up their great shape and also take ESL One.

ESL: Thank you for your time and have a great event! Any shoutouts you would like to make?

Meruna: I would like to shoutout to my boyfriend for being so patient with me and my crazy hobby!

One of the integral parts of ESL One Frankfurt was the cosplay competition, with cosplayers from ten different countries traveling to the Commerzbank Arena to show off their crafting skills by making and wearing some incredible Dota 2 costumes.

The judges had a tough task deciding the winners, and as the competition focused solely on craft the final decision quite literally came down to the very last thread. Check out the top five cosplayers of ESL One Frankfurt (and their costumes) below!

Timbersaw: the undeniable winner

Roman, AKA TanakhT, wowed everyone with his outstanding Timbersaw cosplay, with his incredible crafting skills earning him first place in the cosplay competition. Roman himself had the following to say about his experience:

“First of all, thanks to all the people who helped me. They were all so nice: opening doors, getting me drinks, dressing me up or cheering – it all helped. It felt great to be in top five knowing I was going to be onstage in front of the crowd, but it went beyond my expectations. The crowd was crazy! Winning first place is the best thing that could have happened and I DO appreciate it, meaning I couldn’t be happier. Hopefully this whole experience will open some new doors for me, and I can already tell you that I’m going to be bringing the big guns next year!”

Windranger: the devil’s in the details

Katarzyna, AKA Kairi, definitely proved that the devil is in the details. Although Windranger may not seem like a difficult costume to make, Kairi’s cosplay was extremely detailed and very well executed. Her bow demonstrated the highest crafting skills, and together with the use of great materials and a high-quality finish, it earned her the second place spot.

Vengeful Spirit: all about the craft

Meruna’s cosplay featured incredibly high-quality armor and weapon crafting as well fantastic body paint and makeup application skills. The details, precision and great proportions of her costume secured her third place.

Astrid, AKA Caefire, took on a very difficult task by cosplaying as Enchantress. Her creativity and talent resulted in a costume that was smartly made and fantastic looking – the crafting work she put into the wig made it look like it was taken directly out of the game. Her great effort earned Caefire fourth place in the cosplay competition.

Legion Commander: powerful armor for a powerful hero

Fifth place went to Aonir and her impressive Legion Commander costume. It takes skill to craft armor of such size and detail while still ending up with a polished finish. Aonir definitely proved her skills in Frankfurt, and took fifth place in the competition.

An enormous thank you to all of the cosplayers who were at ESL One Frankfurt and helped enrich this epic event. We are incredibly grateful that you shared your talent with us and hope to see you all again next time!

ESL One Frankfurt 2015 will be attended by at least 43 cosplayers from 10 different countries including the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Romania, Belgium and Russia.

These cosplayers will be showing up as 21 different heroes (or 19 if you want to remove the Shopkeeper and Shendelzare) between them, meaning there’s a great chance that those at the event will get to see their favorite hero cosplayed. If you think the numbers don’t add up, don’t worry – although we’re going to see four people cosplaying as Lina, they have each chosen a different set to craft.

ESL: Hi there, Fayela! How did your adventure with cosplay begin?
Fayela: My ‘cosplay career’ started with Heidi and Sailor Moon – those were the shows that kicked off my interest in anime and manga. At that time, the internet was rising in popularity, and the more I developed my interest in anime, manga and of course games, the more I grew to like Japan and its culture, which I tremendously enjoy to this day. I have always been a huge fan of cosplayers and adored them for their work as I couldn’t sew back then. One day I met a friend who’d already done some cosplays at that point, and they inspired me to do something myself.

ESL: Last year you cosplayed as Crystal Maiden. Why did you pick her to cosplay as?
Fayela: Since the day I started gaming (13-year-old Fayela back then), I enjoyed playing support characters, and I’m also a big lover of snow. That’s why my first nickname was Snowflake, and many people still call me Snow to this day. So one might think CM was made for me, haha. She’s an awesome support character and fights with ice and snow!

ESL: How long did the costume take you to make?
Fayela: About one week and two weekends, I guess. I only had time to sew and craft her costume after work but it all went really well and I had no major problems doing so. That’s why I was able to finish her in such a short amount of time!

ESL: What was the most difficult part of the costume to get right?
Fayela: Definitely her staff! The crystals were a really big problem for me but I had help from a friend who had the idea of Pepakura! I was really relieved that I had a helping hand there.

ESL: What is your fondest memory from last year’s ESL One Frankfurt?
Fayela: There are so many things I still remember. ESL One Frankfurt was an awesome event and a great opportunity for me. It was my very first costume competition, but spending time with all the other great cosplayers was gorgeous!

ESL: Tell us about the costume you’re preparing for this year’s event.
Fayela: Currently I’m working on Queen of Pain (the Chained Mistress Set). It’s my biggest costume project ever and I hope I can finish it in time. I’ll give my best!

ESL: Why did you pick this particular character? Do you think you share any particular traits with them?
Fayela: First of all, I really like her design as she’s a succubus. After playing her for some matches, I also love her personality (her voice is so sexy!). She has a really strong character and great self confidence – guess that’s why I admire her so much.

ESL: What are you looking forward to the most at ESL One Frankfurt 2015?
Fayela: To see all the people I met last year, have a great time together and, of course, meet new people. I’m looking forward to creating unforgettable memories with you all and hope that we’ll have a lot of fun!

“This was the part I most looked forward to creating for this cosplay – it’s made from wood, foam, transparent Worbla and LED lights. This is the first time I’ve worked with LED lights so I’m happy it all kind of worked out – at least this means everyone can do it!”

“Bamboo and Shagbark are my all-time favorite couriers, and I’ve always wanted to have one of them be part of my cosplay at an event. I was also interested in learning how to make moving wings myself, so I thought Bamboo would be the perfect test. Many frustrations were had, but it was all worth it!”

“I tried to recreate Vengeful Spirit’s hooves as best I could while still making the cosplay wearable for a few hours. I made them with expanding foam, foam sheets and papier-mâché.”

“This is how most of my armor looks before it gets painted with base colors. Nothing ever looks like it’s going to be even slightly good looking at the end – good thing everything changes with even the first layer of paint!

The little ball is supposed to be the fish ward. It still needs a lot of work, but the programming for the eyes and the fixings for their movement are already done. Now I might want to start making it look like a real fish with foam!”

One of the most outstanding cosplays was Kittycricri’s Windrunner. Her fantastic crafting skills were recognized by the judges, and she took first place in the cosplay competition. Since Kittycricri is participating in the competition again this year, we took the opportunity to chat with her about cosplay, ESL One Frankfurt and her plans for this year’s event.

ESL: Hi, Kittycricri! First of all, can you tell us how your cosplay adventure began?

Kittycricri: Hi! I started enjoying cosplay about ten years ago when it was still some kind of obscure hobby people didn’t understand! I’ve always been very passionate about games and anime, which were introduced to me by my lovely older brothers, and I’ve always loved crafting and art classes. So, as soon as I was old enough, I thought I’d combine both of my hobbies and create costumes of my favorite characters.

ESL: Last year, your Windrunner cosplay won first prize at the ESL One Frankfurt competition. How did it feel to take first place?

Kittycricri: It felt really great, especially when the crowd congratulated me. That was the best reward – thanks, guys!

ESL: How long and how big of a budget did it take to create your costume?

Kittycricri: I think my Windrunner cosplay took me about two months, including a bunch of days I didn’t work on it. Regarding the budget, I’d say it was probably around €150 for the base materials, which is still pretty reasonable. I try to not go overboard with my cosplay materials!

ESL: Let’s talk this year’s ESL One. What cosplay are you preparing for 2015’s event?

Kittycricri: This year, I decided to bring something less known: Shendelzare (and a little Captain Bamboo as my shoulder companion)! I’m secretly hoping they’ll add her design to the game in the near future.

ESL: What are your criteria when choosing your projects?

Kittycricri: Most of the time, I go for a combination of love for the character and the design. I don’t think I’d be able to work for months on something I don’t find visually appealing or on a character for whom I have no affection. This year, another reason was the fact that one of my friends is cosplaying as Vengeful Spirit, so I thought it might be great if we could cosplay together. If anyone wants to be our Skywrath Mage, they’re welcome to join us!

ESL: Do you think you can win two years in a row?

Kittycricri: I guess it’s possible with enough hard work and dedication. However, I don’t have high hopes for this year – the level will be very high and will easily reach the level of big European cosplay competitions. I’m sure the crowd will love the amount of great cosplayers this year!

ESL: What is your favorite thing about ESL One Frankfurt?

Kittycricri: I’m looking forward to what ESL One is about: spending two full days with other people who share the same passion! Last year, people were very social and I made great friends at this event. I was literally able to sit in any seat and people would just start talking about anything Dota 2 related. I’m definitely looking forward to this again.

ESL: Who is your favorite Dota 2 character and why?

Kittycricri: Without a doubt, Rylai the Crystal Maiden. She’s the one I started out with and even though she might not be the strongest, she’s the one that showed me my favorite role in a team, which is supporting my carries to victory!

ESL: What other video games do you play? Do you also cosplay characters from them (or any other films, cartoons, TV shows, etc.)?

Kittycricri: I ditched most of my games the day I started playing Dota, but my favorite games these days would be Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2. However, deep down my favorites will always be Megaman and Mario on the NES.

I do cosplay most of the characters that I think look cool and stand out. My favorites would be Cammy from Street Fighter, Major Kusanagi from GITS and the little fairies from Rayman Origins.

ESL: What is your dream cosplay?

Kittycricri: I don’t really have a dream cosplay but I do have a wish list which consists of making my favorite set of each female Dota 2 hero. I might skip Spectre and Broodmother, though!

ESL: Thank you for your time and good luck at the ESL One Frankfurt cosplay competition! Any last shoutouts you would like to make?

Kittycricri: Thank you very much! I’d like to give a big shoutout to all the cosplayers heading to ESL One Frankfurt this year and wish them good luck! Also a big thank you to ESL for supporting cosplayers and giving us all a wonderful time at your events! Expect some great quality costumes!

ESL: Hi, Merlo! First of all, please tell us how your adventure with cosplay began.
Merlino “Merlo” Milone: It started with ESL One Frankfurt 2014, really – I’d never cosplayed before or after that event. I just did it because I thought it would be fun and interesting. And it actually was! But cosplaying in general is not my kind of jam. Sure, I do love bringing some Dota 2 cosplaying action to Italian comic cons in general, but you won’t see me doing seven to eight original cosplays in one year.

ESL: When did you first get into Dota?
Merlo: Since the first installment, but I was so young and didn’t really care about what I was doing. DotA players will remember for sure that hacking and matchmaking in general was a nightmare in the good ol’ days, and eventually I lost interest and moved on to HoN thanks to a friend. However, after years and years I finally had my Dota 2 beta key, and I haven’t stopped playing since (except the occasional ‘karma pause’).

ESL: Who is your favourite Dota 2 character and why?
Merlo: Storm Spirit for sure! He has so much charisma and he’s a lovable, obnoxious, goofball. On the gameplay side, he’s just plain broken in every stage of the game. Storm Spirit can literally carry an entire team, even if it’s on the losing side: a combination of high mobility and tons of nuke potential that has no equal.

ESL: What is your fondest memory from last year’s ESL One Frankfurt?
Merlo: As it was my first cosplay attempt I didn’t know how to handle the situation, so I was kind of embarrassed to just run around with my belly and chest hairs exposed (and I was completely blue on top of that). But all of the people at the event just blew me away. Everyone was super nice and supportive during and after the cosplay competition. I loved every minute of it, making someone smile or cheer with a funny pose or a picture. I also managed to run frequently from place to place to make everyone happy. Moreover, when I returned home I found out that the Italian Dota community managed to support me from afar with pictures, messages of encouragement and much, much more. It was the people who made ESL One Frankfurt amazing for me.

ESL: Why did you decide to cosplay as Storm Spirit?
Merlo: I was drawn to him because we are very much alike in terms of looks and personality. Also, as I said before, he’s one of my favorite heroes in Dota 2.

ESL: How long did it take for you get fully dressed and made up each day?
Merlo: Dressing up only took five minutes. The makeup, however, took me about two hours as I had a lot of body to cover up with multiple layers of body paint (it wears off/melts really fast at high temperatures). I must say it was a real pain the first day as I couldn’t drink or eat (body paint is highly toxic if ingested). I brought straws on the second day and that really saved me.

ESL: We heard you even went to the ESL One Frankfurt afterparty in your cosplay getup – did it make the night more interesting?
Merlo: Sure did, but it was a little weird. Literally everybody greeted me and smiled, even the players were extra nice to me, especially in the VIP area. Fun fact: I actually went in cosplay not because I wanted to, but because I had to. Body paint is extremely hard to wash off (you need like four showers in a row to clean up and even that might not be enough), so I dealt with it and went anyway.

ESL: Tell us about the costume you’re preparing for this year’s event.
Merlo: I’m preparing a Shopkeeper costume. It will be pretty normal tailoring stuff this time, with some item props and a birdcage staff. But we’ll see, as as I will be departing from Italy, I’ll have infinite problems with my luggage. I still don’t know how I’ll handle that aspect – if I bring too much stuff, I can’t check in for my flight.

ESL: Why did you pick this particular character? Do you think you share any particular traits with them?
Merlo: It’s a pretty original cosplay, I should say. Nobody has made one yet. He has a kickass trailer and I hope to recreate some of his creepy charm. Also we share the same *cough* weight *cough* and height (nope, I didn’t work out at all in over the past year).

ESL: What are you looking forward to the most at ESL One Frankfurt 2015?
Merlo: The thing I freaking loved last year was finally being able to talk with some high-profile casters and players. As an Italian caster myself, I found a lot of things in common with TobiWan, Synderen and Bruno. We spoke a lot about streaming, casting and metagaming over those two days. I hope to get in touch with them again and share some more points of view, especially with Synderen and Fear.

ESL: Which team are you going to be supporting in Frankfurt and why? Do you think they have what it takes to take first place?
Merlo: I have to say I’m a big fan of this year’s Cloud9 lineup. I think BigDaddy is a solid player and a great support – his Earthshaker made me tremble more than one time. I also like  EternalEnvy, who brings a lot of passion to the field. However, in the end, I have to bet on Evil Geniuses for first place. They are far more experienced (thanks to Fear) and better coordinated than anyone else.

Chocolate Cosplay

First up, we have Chocolate, whose first foray into cosplay was in 2009. At last year’s ESL One Frankfurt she cosplayed as Crystal Maiden, a hero she often plays in Dota 2 as she reminds her of her favorite Warcraft 3 character Jaina.

This year, we will also see her as Crystal Maiden, but this time wearing the Arcana set. It was Chocolate’s love for the hero as well as winter-themed things that made her decide to become Crystal Maiden yet again – you can see some progress photos of the costume in the making below.

So why is Chocolate attending ESL One Frankfurt again? One of the key reasons she gave is that the event gives attendees a chance to meet people who share their passion, like Kittycricri, the winner of that year’s cosplay competition – the amazing community and atmosphere make people want to come back for more. Chocolate can’t wait to see all the awesome cosplays – with plenty of new cosplayers attending, there’s going to be a lot to look at!

Aonir Cosplay

Next, meet Aonir. She started cosplaying about 13 years ago after reading about the Japanese cosplay scene. Having always liked sewing at school, she saw it as an opportunity to become her favorite character. Back then, it was Rinoa from Final Fantasy 8, and the adventure continued from there!
The costume we saw Aonir in last year was Legion Commander, chosen because she’s a strong woman and a proud fighter, which both struck a chord with Aonir. Aonir also wanted to challenge herself with a cosplay that required the crafting armour as well as making something that isn’t often seen at events.

The costume took about a month to make and doing so proved to be very difficult, especially attaching the different parts to each other. Despite all her hard work, Aonir wasn’t satisfied with her Legion Commander and decided to bring it to ESL One Frankfurt again, although this time in the Flight of the Valkyrie set. You can check out the progress she’s making on this year’s cosplay in the photo below:

Aonir is returning to ESL One Frankfurt because of the fellow Dota 2 fans she gets to meet as well as the amazing cosplay feedback from attendees. She is once again looking forward to “meeting lots of hyped, esports-loving Dota 2 fans like me! Nothing feels better than being between hundreds or even thousands of people cheering and screaming with you! I’m also looking forward to meeting the other cosplayers.”
