As the first Dota 2 Major event with a live audience since early 2020, ESL One Stockholm marks the rebirth of Dota 2 events with fans on-site. The tournament will conclude the Spring Tour of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) 2021-2022 season. The first Major of the current season, which would conclude the Winter Tour and was set to take place earlier this year, was replaced by six regional finals events produced online all around the world.

The Major features 18 of the world’s best Dota 2 teams from each Region’s Division I bracket with two to four slots available per region (China, Eastern Europe, North America, South America, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe). The teams battle it out to take home their share of the $500,000 total prize pool, as well as to earn more DPC Points in order to qualify for the renowned The International (TI) 11.

The group stage, which uses a best-of-2 round-robin format, sees the participating teams split into two groups of nine teams and will take place in a studio environment. The top six teams of each group will proceed to the double-elimination playoff stage where they will face off in front of the live audience at Stockholm’s Hovet arena to ultimately raise the trophy on May 22.

“It has been a long two years for Dota 2’s esports ecosystem, and we couldn’t be more excited to finally invite Dota 2 fans back on-site,” said Artem Bykov, General Manager, Game Management at ESL Gaming. “Organizing a Major is always special, but with so much at stake right now, ESL One Stockholm will simply be awesome. We can’t wait for it to get started!”

The ticket sale for ESL One Stockholm powered by Intel® will start on Thursday, February 17, at 5 pm CET. Day tickets are available from SEK 299 and three-day tickets start at SEK 899. The Group Stage

Kicking off the tournament on August 21st, the Group Stage promised to be action packed from the get-go; Group A had two-time DPC Champions Virtus.pro and ESL One Summer victors T1, whilst Group B had DreamLeague DPC Champions Alliance and the previous Major winners PSG.LGD. Furthermore, the new Dota patch 7.30 had dropped a couple days before, giving some fresh new balance changes to the game.

In Group A, it quickly became clear that Virtus.pro was the dominant team; in fact they didn’t lose a single game in the whole Group Stage! More surprising was Tundra Esports success, managing to beat every opponent they faced with the exception of VP. ESL One Summer champs T1 struggled to stay afloat, whilst Creepwave and Thunder Predator sunk to the bottom and were knocked out.

Group B was far more contested, with no clear dominant team. South American team beastcoast managed to surpass PSG.LGD in points, taking the top of the leaderboard, with the Chinese team coming second. Team Liquid and SG esports unfortunately fell short and were sent packing after a string of losses.

The Playoffs

Virtus.pro got to work instantly, knocking PSG.LGD down to the Lower Bracket in a convincing 2-0, whilst Tundra Esports did the same to beastcoast. When these two dominant teams met in the Upper Bracket Finals, to many people’s shock it was Tundra that came out of the series unscathed with a remarkable 2-0 against VP. People were also shocked to find out team captain Fata didn’t know how a bottle worked.

In the Lower Bracket, T1 KO-d DPC Champs Alliance with a 2-1, and then went on to knock out the last remaining South American team beastcoast. However, when T1 met PSG.LGD in the Lower Bracket Round 3, it was the Chinese Major winners who ended up taking the victory. PSG.LGD then went on to knock out Virtus.pro 2-1, putting a surprising end to VP’s dominant performance in the tournament so far.

Many fans had expected PSG.LGD to make it to the Grand Finals, but not many had put down Tundra Esports to be a Grand Finalist. However, despite the fact Tundra had failed to qualify for The International, they were a serious force to be reckoned with. The fairly recent addition of Sneyking to pos 4 had clearly had a superb impact on the team, as they managed to easily take Game 1 off PSG.LGD in just 32 minutes. The Major winners were not going to go down without a fight though, and LGD swiped two games off of Tundra Esports thanks to xiao8’s mid Leshrac. The next two games were a nail-biting 50 minutes each, with both teams giving it their all. Finally off of a Tier 3 tower dive Tundra Esports wiped PSG.LGD and with no buybacks, the Chinese team were forced to concede the 5th and final game.

Hopefully we see Tundra Esports continue to dominate in the post-TI season!

]]> ESL is delighted to announce the ESL One DPC CIS powered by Intel, a Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) League, taking place from January 18th to February 16th.

The exciting new Dota Pro Circuit League is set to kick off 2021 after a year without the famous International, the largest Dota 2 tournament in the world. The new DPC Circuit will see multiple online leagues for separate regions, as well as the return of the Majors.

Open Qualifiers

  • Open Qualifiers for the Lower Division begin on January 5th, 18:00 MSK. 4 teams will qualify through the Open Qualifiers
  • 8 teams will qualify for the Upper and Lower Division through a Decider Tournament, held on January 8th, 17:00 MSK
  • The remaining 4 teams in the Upper Division are direct invites; Virtus.pro, Natus Vincere, Team Spirit and Live to Win

Format

  • 16 teams split between an Upper and Lower Division. Round Robin Best of 3 between all teams of each bracket.
  • Top 2 teams from the Upper Division will receive an invite to the next Dota 2 Major
  • Bottom 2 teams from the Upper Division will be relegated to the Lower Division
  • Top 2 teams from the Lower Division will advance to the Upper Bracket

Prizes

  • US$205,000 total prize pool for Upper Bracket
  • US$75,000 total prize pool for Lower Bracket
  • DPC points will be awarded accordingly

Viewing

  • Online-only tournament; no tickets required
  • Broadcast in English, Chinese, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and more (to be confirmed)

]]> The ESL Academy delivered by DHL will provide Dota 2 talent with the opportunity to display their ability on the big stage. In cooperation with DHL as founding and presenting partner, ESL created a system to develop and foster potential Dota 2 talent, accelerating their path to professional esports. ESL Academy’s partnership with grassroot platform Dotabuff Reach is set to roll out today.

The ESL Academy system’s goal is to develop, promote, and elevate undiscovered Dota 2 talent on the verge of going pro. The leaderboard will be derived from the Dotabuff Reach platform, functioning as the grassroot platform in North America and Europe. Gathering talent from both regions, four former Dota 2 veterans will draft teams from the Top 40 players of each region. Each coach will draft their own team from qualifying competitors, selecting the most promising top players to train them on- and offline to compete in a professional esports environment. ESL Academy final matches will be held in conjunction with ESL One tournaments to provide players a chance to display their expertise in front of the largest Dota 2 community live and online. The ESL Academy season features over $240,000 USD in combined prize-pools throughout year one.

“We’ve been working hard on creating something completely new for the Dota 2 community. 

Building the path from zero to hero lies in our DNA, and in order to fulfill ESL’s brand purpose, we needed to derive an open system for Dota 2. We want ambitious players at home to see a clear path forward and to gain experience in playing in professional esports environments.” says Ulrich Schulze, Senior Vice President Product at ESL. “In DHL we found a strong partner with the same values to develop a new way for players on the verge of going pro to get noticed, and make it to masters level tournaments like ESL One.”

Dotabuff Reach derives a ladder system available for all players eligible to play Dota 2. Once signed up, participants can compete against each other and rise to the top of the leaderboard. In mid-January 2020, ESL Academy qualifications will lock and the top 40 players in each region announced. Coaches will aid their drafted teams of five for a month of online training, providing insight and feedback in order to bond the team and develop strategies in advance of the finals. 

Qualifying players will join their teams offline at bootcamp training delivered by DHL, founding and presenting partner of ESL Academy. DHL Bootcamp guarantees the highest standard for teams to practice in training rooms with the full treatment provided by world class pro gamers. The teams will then face off in a broadcast group stage with two teams advancing to battle it out on the main stage for the crown of the ESL Academy champion and the lion’s share of over 240,000$ USD in prize money.

]]> ESL Asia introduces the ESL SEA Championship for Dota 2, a brand new regional tournament in Southeast Asia with tie-ins to ESL One Birmingham 2020

ESL is proud to announce the first ever season of ESL SEA Championship for Dota 2! A regional tournament featuring 8 of the top teams in Southeast Asia, the competition has a total prize pool of US $20,000. The winner of the Championship will also earn a direct spot to the SEA closed qualifiers of ESL One Birmingham 2020.

The tournament will consist of 4 invited teams which will be announced at a later date. The remaining 4 teams will have to earn their spot through the open qualifiers happening between 29th February and 4th March.
Open Qualifier #1: 29th Feb – 1st Mar
Open Qualifier #2: 3rd – 4th Mar

The 8 teams in the ESL SEA Championship will be split into 2 GSL Groups, with 4 teams in each group. Group A matches will be played on the 9th & 10th March and Group B matches on the 25th & 26th March. The top 2 teams of each group will advance to a single-elimination playoffs happening on the 4th & 5th April. All matches are best-of-3s with the exception of the Grand Final which will be a best-of-5.
