]]> Intel Extreme Masters Sydney, the first event of IEM Season 13, is now over. And what an event it was. We saw huge upsets, world-class plays, an amazing crowd going mental in the arena, and the broadcast crew not holding back on the banter. IEM Sydney 2018 is definitely one for the history books.

A total of 16 teams from around the world competed in the tournament but only one could snatch the lion’s share of the US$250,000 prize pool, the coveted trophy, and a win counting towards the Intel Grand Slam. And that team ended up being no other than FaZe Clan. Here’s how the tournament unfolded.

The IEM Sydney group stage was nothing short of exciting, and even shocking. Group A saw TyLoo and Renegades advancing to the playoffs from the upper bracket, sending SK Gaming and FaZe Clan respectively to fight in the lower bracket. This wasn’t the end of upsets for SK Gaming however, as they lost to the local Greyhound Gaming and were eliminated from the tournament after only having played two series. Greyhound got eliminated by FaZe Clan in their next match, but that didn’t take away from the great impression they left on everyone watching.

Five matches were played in the playoffs, and five times a map had to go into overtime, delivering tons of nail-biting action. The grand final alone went to two overtimes, with the third map ending in 16:14, and all in favor of our new champions, FaZe Clan.

]]> Eight invited and eight qualified – a total of 16 CS:GO teams will compete at this year’s IEM World Championship Katowice. With the invited teams having recently been revealed, all is left is keeping a close eye to the regional qualifiers as teams fight for the remaining slots.

The first region to have concluded its qualifiers is Asia, as the final match was played earlier today. All teams gave it their all for a chance to compete at the world’s largest esports event but it was TyLoo who bested all of their opponents and will travel to Katowice.

]]> The early years and 1.6

“Wooooow, this is so cool”, were the first words coming out of GeT_RiGhT’s mouth after his older brother introduced him to Counter-Strike for the first time at the tender age of nine. 18 years later, and a decade into his professional career, I’d wager GeT_RiGhT still reacts that very same way when he learns something new about the game he so genuinely loves.

Back then, the prospect of forming a team and competing against others online or at LAN cafés immediately drew GTR in. Like all greats in any sport, GeT_RiGhT is extremely competitive. The endless possibilities both tactically and mechanically is what hooked him until today.

GeT_RiGhT had his breakthrough at the Rendezvous LAN#24 in 2007, where he played in a mix team with THREAT, who you all of course know as NiP’s current coach. THREAT was so impressed with GTR’s gameplay that he invited him to join his team, Begrip Gaming.

GeT_RiGhT accepted, and it wasn’t long until he left his first mark in Counter-Strike. That same year, GTR and Begrip won the Swedish qualifier to ESWC 2007 after upsetting both favorites, SK Gaming and the Ninjas in Pyjamas.

Begrip’s success was short lived however. They played poorly at ESWC and shortly thereafter disbanded again.

GeT_RiGhT was only 17 at the time and, while already an ungodly aimer, he still had a lot to learn in the world of professional Counter-Strike. He had two unsuccessful, short-lived stints with NiP and SK as a result of immaturity and flawed in-game communication.

But one thing from his time with NiP stuck with GTR until today. RobbaN, a fellow Ninja, recognized a very particular set of skills in the young Swede. RobbaN said to GTR: “I want you to be the most hated player in the world.”

GeT_RiGhT embraced this quest put upon him and over a very long career acquired those skills. Skills that make him a nightmare to play against for every Counter-Strike player on the planet. The role that GTR helped define, that to this day carries his signature – the lurker.

Even I hated GeT_RiGhT and I wasn’t even a player. I was a hard-core mouz fanboy and it simply hurt to watch my favorite team get torn apart by the player who embodies the “Ninja” part of NiP like none other. Of course, my and everybody else’s feelings were just admiration disguised as hate, but that’s difficult to admit when you’re fanboying…

For the rest of the year, GTR worked on eradicating his flaws before exploding onto the scene like Napoleon Dynamite in 2009 after joining Fnatic. Lead by Patrick “cArn” Sättermon, Fnatic had Harley “dsn” Örwall on the AWP and the most deadly trio in all of CS – GTR, f0rest and Rasmus “GuX” Ståhl on the rifles. In many ways, the Fnatic of old compares to today’s FaZe, just more skilled.

2009 saw Fnatic deliver one of the most dominant years in CS history, only rivalled by Na’Vi’s 2010 and surpassed, of course, by GTR’s Ninjas in Pyjamas of 2012-2014. In addition to the team’s success, the only 18-year-old GeT_RiGhT won the 2009 eSports Player of the year award.

In 2010, Fnatic broke apart and GeT_RiGhT once again joined SK Gaming. He brought f0rest along with him and the two teamed up with RobbaN, Johan “face” Klasson and Marcus “Delpan” Larsson. Under SK’s banner, GTR & Co. enjoyed two highly successful years, winning multiple major international titles before it was time to switch games in 2012, when CS:GO was released.

CS:GO – 87:0 – Today

We all know how that switchover worked out for GeT_RiGhT. Pretty, pretty good, as Larry David would say.

For the start of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, HeatoN revived the Ninjas in Pyjamas. He assembled three CS 1.6 and two CS: Source legends – GTR, f0rest, Xizt, friberg and Fifflaren. They were untouchable from the get-go and ruled over the CS:GO universe with a wrath of biblical proportions.

Thirteen consecutive LAN event victories without dropping a single map, the Ninja’s eighty-seven to zero run for the ages. Five major finals in a row, one major title at ESL One Cologne 2014, two years of NiP hegemony lead by far and away the world’s best player – GeT_RiGhT!

Major winner at last!

GTR did what no other player could. He dominated in 1.6 and CS:GO, which puts him in a class of his own and poses the question: is GeT_RiGhT the best Counter-Strike player of all time? Yes, yes he is!

NiP’s, and in extension GTR’s fall from power inevitably set in towards the end of 2014. The Ninjas won fewer and fewer tournaments as time went on, and when IEM Oakland Season XII kicks off next week, it will be exactly one year since GTR’s last tier-one trophy. The longest the Ninjas had to endure without an event victory.

Can the Ninjas upend that trend and start a long and gruelling climb back to the mountaintop in Oakland? Most will put it beyond them, myself included. The competition is too tough with all the world’s best teams in attendance.

But, regardless of the outcome, GeT_RiGhT and his pyjama-wearing companions have played themselves into the hearts of countless fans around the world. They have given us some of the most memorable, exciting and entertaining moments of Counter-Strike history.

And we, the Counter-Strike community, are blessed to have an ambassador like GeT_RiGhT for our game. In 2007, he took a huge risk halting his education to pursue a career in Esports without knowing if he could ever make a living from it. He went all in, and it payed off. Ten years later he’s still at it with the same unbridled passion. And we will always be with him!

]]> In June of 2017, ESL and Intel have announced their partnership in a new challenge, the Intel Grand Slam. In this ongoing challenge, which includes ESL and DreamHack events with a prize purse of $200,000 or more, the first team to reach four tournament victories is rewarded an extra $1,000,000 in cash.

It’s important to note: once a team wins its first tournament, it now has to win three more titles in the following nine events that are part of the circuit. If they are unsuccessful within said timeframe, their title score gets reset, and the race starts anew.

To spice things up, a spoils bonus of $100,000 will be rewarded to the team that prevents a side from successfully completing the challenge.

The Three Victors

Coming into IEM Oakland, three teams are Intel Grand Slam titleholders: SK, G2 and FaZe. But the premise for the trio couldn’t be different.

When FalleN’s boys won ESL One Cologne in July, the first tourney of the Grand Slam circuit, the Brazilians looked unstoppable. Cesar’s proclamation “Veni, vidi, vici”, very much applied to the team during those weeks, as they came to Europe, saw three titles, and conquered all of them.

Now? It’s a different story entirely. After a series of poor LAN performances, and their worst showing all year at the recent ELEAGUE event, SK have announced a roster move: boltz will take felp’s place. In Oakland however, the shuffle will not be in effect yet, and both players will compete with their current orgs.

Knowing a player shuffle looms ahead, is never easy on a team’s mentality. How coldzera & Co. deal with this mental hurdle, will immensely effect their chances to grab a second win in the race to the Grand Slam – they only have seven tournaments left to reach four titles, the clock is ticking!

Then there’s G2, who are unable to escape the predicament of inconsistency. When firing on all cylinders, they surpass even FaZe in individual ability. Nobody puts up resistance against the French steam roller. Gold medals at the EPL Season 5 finals and DreamHack Masters Malmö, where they entered the Grand Slam race, are prime examples.

But unfortunately, group stage exits are also daily fare for shox’s boys. Anything from trophy to tragedy is possible for the Frenchmen at IEM Oakland. Winning would mean eight tournaments to complete the Grand Slam.

Finally, the hard-hitting FaZe Clan. Even with Oakland still a month away, the European mix of all-stars have to be considered the favorites to take the lead. Karrigan’s troupe has won 15 consecutive maps on LAN, which is simply mind boggling, considering they played several BO3s versus top-ten opposition. Another tourney without a map loss would make this a feat of historical proportions.

It’s a pleasure to watch the new FaZe play. Everything seems so smooth under karrigan’s lead, and never has that beautiful headshot-sound so frequently echoed through the servers.

See for yourself – CLINK, CLINK, CLINK

It’s still too early to call, but if NiKo, olof, rain, GuardiaN and karrigan keep up the pace, we could very well be witnessing the beginning of a new CS:GO dynasty, and another win towards the Grand Slam in Oakland seems quite likely at this point.

Of course, we shall not forget about all the other teams that will descent upon Oakland to fight for glory, a prize purse of $300,000 and to join the race for the Intel Grand Slam.

Only Fnatic and North are missing from the world’s top-ten ranked teams. Astralis, Cloud9, Ninjas in Pyjamas, major winners Gambit, EnVyUs, Immortals, Team Liquid, The Mongolz and OpTic for the first time on LAN with their new squad, will all face off against one another, with equal chances of playing for the win!

The Intel Grand Slam means more than just extra cash

The Intel Grand Slam is the most difficult trophy to win in today’s Counter-Strike landscape. And difficulty is what the mindset of any top professional seeks, craves even. At the end of the day, how difficult a feat is to achieve, is what separates the good players from the greats.

It could be years before a team successfully completes the Grand Slam. And when it happens, the $1,000,000 will be nice, but the real difference-maker for the titleholders will be that it’s a testament of greatness!

Intel® Extreme Masters Oakland returns to the Bay Area and Oracle Arena on November 18-19 with the world’s top teams competing for the coveted trophy, a US$300,000 prize pool, and a win counting towards the Intel Grand Slam.

Winning IEM Oakland counts towards the Intel Grand Slam: a new system that awards a US$1,000,000 prize to the team that has won four out of the last ten $200,000 events held between DreamHack and ESL. So far, SK Gaming,G2 Esports, and FaZe Clan are in the lead with their wins at the recent ESL One Cologne 2017, DreamHack Masters Malmo and ESL One New York respectively, with the next tournament being ESL One New York. IEM Oakland comes in as the fourth event.

]]> Today, May 7th, the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia, and thousands of roaring fans saw the conclusion of Australia’s first ever esports stadium event. SK Gaming and FaZe Clan took the stage for one last battle to determine who would take the first championship title of season 12 of Intel Extreme Masters. After a total of four days of amazing play and top notch CS:GO action, it was SK Gaming who lifted the coveted IEM Sydney trophy.
