]]> A total of sixteen teams fought it out for the first ever Dota 2 major title in Frankfurt, but in the end there could be only one champion. The Frankfurt Major presented by ESL may be over, but OG’s journey to the top was a truly remarkable Cinderella story with some incredible moments – check out some of our coverage highlights below!

Qualifier and group stage coverage

The qualifiers are where it all began – and competition was fierce. Things started hotting up even more in the group stage, and ESLGaming.com was on hand with both previews and recaps to keep you abreast of the action.

Frankfurt Major recaps

The main event brought us six days of top-notch Dota 2 competition, and upsets, rematches and intercontinental clashes were all on the cards. While OG eventually took down Team Secret in the grand finals, there were some truly incredible matches throughout the event.

]]> The Frankfurt Major is now over, with the epic event having concluded last Saturday. With almost a week of top-notch Dota 2 action delivered by teams from around the world, in the end it was OG who triumphed and took home the trophy as well as the first Dota 2 major championship title.

]]> Yesterday, November 13th, marked the beginning of the first ever Dota 2 official Valve major happening in Frankfurt, Germany. Teams of groups A and B kicked off the tournament with a series of exciting matches, fighting for a slot in the upper bracket.

Group A

Group A had one clear favorite – The International 4 champions, Evil Geniuses. Although their best of three matchups did not go as smoothly, dropping a game against both Fnatic and Virtus.pro, they did manage to come out on top with a 2-0 score overall. Following suit were Virtus.pro who 2-0’d Newbee twice and only lost to Evil Geniuses 1-2, securing the second slot in the group and moving to the upper bracket. Both Fnatic and Newbee got moved to the lower bracket.

Group B

Group B had two ESL One New York champions – 2014 winners, Vici Gaming and reigning champions, Vega Squadron, as well as two teams who could have surprised everyone – OG and Unknown. In the end, it was the two ESL One trophy winners who clenched the first two slots, securing the transition to the upper bracket of the main event. OG and Unknown will continue their battle in the lower bracket.

]]> Saturday, November 14th, will mark the second day of the Frankfurt Major and it will allow us to see the remaining eight teams from groups C and D in action. We already took a closer look at groups A and B and you can expect a lot of excitement in the final two groups as well. Let check out what they have in store for us.

Another day, another tournament win for Team Secret? At the rate they are winning trophies, it might well come to that! After Team Secret lost every team member except Puppey in the wake of TI5, many people thought it would be hard for the new squad to reach that level of quality again, or that it would at least take while. But Team Secret wasted no time to completely roll over the competition, coming second at ESL One New York and winning the MLG World Finals, as well as the Nanyang Championships. The sky’s the limit for them and they are most definitely the team to beat in group C.

Trying their best to kick them off the pole position will be Newbee’s youth squad, Newbee Young. The team is relatively unknown outside of China, getting the invite to the Frankfurt Major after coming third in the Chinese qualifiers, replacing second seed Invictus Gaming due to visa issues. People don’t expect Newbee Young to root out any trees at the Major, meaning any games won or even a series victory would already be a big step for them. And they might have a shot at winning some games in an interesting group C.

Fellow Chinese team LGD Gaming who were widely regarded as one of the favorites to win TI5 underwent some significant roster changes since coming in third in Seattle. By replacing Yao and captain xiao8 with DDC and rOtK, LDG still are a great team on paper, but they will need some time to gel, as shown by their performance at the MLG World Finals. Once they find their groove, they could well be in the mix to compete for top honors at the event and a lot of fans and teams will keep a close eye on them.

Last but not least, new look Cloud9 will round out group C. Since they dropped their long time roster and acquired a whole new team centered around 1437, the Americans are stuck behind Evil Geniuses in the NA pecking order. The Frankfurt Major will be a great opportunity for them to step out of the shadows and surprise the scene, but looking at their recent MLG performance, they still have some way to go. Group C might well come down to a three horse race for the second upper bracket seed while Team Secret sits on top of the group.

  • Mineski

On their quest back to glory, legendary Chinese team EHOME have once again revamped their roster after finishing top 5-6 at TI5. Even though it’s hard to replace players of the caliber of rOtK and DDC, EHOME legend LaNm remained with the team as the captain and under such leadership they most certainly have the chance for a successful captain at the major. It will also be one of the first chances for Western fans to get a closer look at the new roster, filled with talented new Chinese players that are still relatively unknown on the international level.

Facing up against them will be none other than Alliance, who are most definitely b[A]ck. With almost the same roster as during their remarkable TI3 championship run, the Swedes are looking mighty strong as of late and they have all the pieces in place for a successful season. Their iconic split push game is working wonders for them and the hype in the community is real. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

On the other hand, CDEC Gaming have not been on top of their game lately. After their downright amazing performance at TI5, the Chinese have run into troubles on the new patch. With them not being able to execute their 6.84 strategies on the new version, their game has stagnated a bit. The fact that no team will get eliminated in the group stages may well play in CDEC’s favor in the end, cause no matter how they perform initially, they will have time to adapt the meta of the tournament. We’ll have to see if they manage to do so.

Mineski are another team that is hard to judge. The SEA team has not had many games against international competition so it’s easy to dismiss them as chanceless minnows at the Major, but in order to qualify, they beat two TI5 teams, Fnatic and MVP Phoenix. And if they can beat opposition such as that, who says they can’t do it again, especially against not yet stable EHOME and slumping CDEC Gaming.

]]> The Frankfurt Major is now officially over. We went through two days of group stages and six days of playoffs, all filled with world-class Dota 2 action. We saw sixteen teams from around the world fighting for the first ever Dota 2 major championship but there could be only one emerging victorious on top of everyone else. We congratulate OG for taking home the major crown and trophy!

Lower bracket finals

Our first match of the day were the lower bracket finals between The International 5 champions, Evil Geniuses, and the international squad of OG. The series delivered many great plays and chills and kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Game one was a one-sided display of utter dominance from Evil Geniuses who had a nearly perfect run, ending with a 29-2 score in kills. It would be the only display of dominance we would see from Evil Geniuses today though, as game two took a 180 degree turnaround. OG took full control in the second game, showing that they will not give up easily and they have what it takes to go into the grand final. They carried that performance and confidence into game three which sealed the deal and with a 2-1 score, OG secured themselves a slot in the grand final and eliminated Evil Geniuses from the tournament.

No matter what the result of the final versus Team Secret would be, OG have still made a very impressive showing with the best lower bracket run in Dota 2 history. They went from the very beginning of the lower bracket till the very end, defeating teams like Virtus.pro, CDEC Gaming or EHOME on the way. Now, there was only the final boss left in the form of Team Secret.

Grand finals

After the lower bracket finals, the time has come to determine who will take home the trophy and the title of the first ever Dota 2 major champion. It all came down to two Western teams who have shown they are truly deserving of being at the top.

The series started off with a dominant performance from OG who took the victory in game one without any major difficulty. Game two was much more intense with Team Secret putting up a better fight. The game went back and forth and lasted for over one hour. In the end, OG prevailed for the second time and was just one win away from the championship. Team Secret did not give up easily though, as they managed to pick up their game and take the next victory, forcing a game four in the series and thus prolonging their hopes for the trophy.

Team Secret’s hopes and dreams were cut off for good in game four as OG was ready to take the ultimate win – they took down the ESL One Frankfurt champions and claimed the first ever Dota 2 championship – GG!

A true Cinderella story

OG showed us an ultimate Cinderella story during this major. After not being directly invited to the Frankfurt Major, they secured themselves a slot through the European qualifiers. They then finished the group stage at the third slot and got moved to the lower bracket where they fought their way through several matchups and beat teams considered bigger favourites. They made their way into the grand finals and proved everyone they are truly worthy of the trophy and the Dota 2 major championship.

]]> Day five of the Frankfurt Major is now behind us and we can easily say “time flies when you’re having fun!”. Only one day of matches remains – tomorrow we will see the first ever Dota 2 major champion crowned. Who will it be? We will find out tomorrow but first, let us look at today’s matches.

There were three matchups planned for today. First, EHOME took on Vici Gaming in the lower bracket. EHOME has had an impressive run this tournament – although they dropped to the lower bracket after the group stage, they managed to win every matchup since then. Vici Gaming turned out to be no exception as they fell to EHOME 0-2 and got eliminated from the tournament.

The second match was a clash of the western Dota 2 giants – Evil Geniuses and Team Secret who delivered a fantastic series. Unsurprisingly, all three games needed to be played out before determining the winner. In the end it was Team Secret who secured a slot in the grand final while Evil Geniuses will have to continue the battle in the lower bracket.

Our final match of the day was the lower bracket’s OG vs. EHOME. OG, similarly to EHOME, paved their way through the entire lower bracket, winning every matchup. The fight was fierce and we saw another series go into game three. It was OG who prevailed in the end, marking the first ever Dota 2 major a truly Western one with only Western teams left in the battle for the championship.

It all ends tomorrow

The Frankfurt Major is coming to an end tomorrow. First, we will see the lower bracket finals between Evil Geniuses and OG, battling it out for the grand final to be played against Team Secret. It all begins at 10:30 CET so be sure to tune in here!

]]> Frankfurt Major has been in full swing for four days now. Every day has been delivering exciting matches and outstanding plays from the best players in the world. Day four was no exception as we saw three great matchups in the lower bracket.

The day started off with Virtus.pro taking on OG. The fight was fierce with all three games having to be played out but in the OG sent the guys from Virtus.pro home and could start preparing for their match against CDEC Gaming later that day. Next up was a Chinese duel between EHOME and LGD Gaming. Again, we saw all three games as both teams gave a good performance. There could only be one final winner though and it was EHOME.

The final match of the day was CDEC Gaming vs. OG. We were in for a real treat courtesy of OG as they dominated the second best team at The International 5. The European team served us a delicious dish in the form of Big Daddy’s Meepo and CDEC simply did not have what it takes to overcome them.

]]> With yesterday’s matches concluded, we are officially halfway done with the Frankfurt Major.The event had real Dota 2 treats in store for us. Two upper bracket finalists have been determined and two more teams got eliminated.

The day started off with the lower bracket matches where OG came out on top of Mineski and Virtus.pro beat Alliance (no real comeback this time). After that, it was time to the upper bracket and a rematch from The International 5 upper bracket final and grand final – Evil Geniuses vs. CDEC Gaming. At TI5, CDEC came out victorious in the upper bracket final with a 2-0 score and fell to EG in the grand final 1-3. This time, the boys in bluegame CDEC no chances and defeated them in a 2-0 fashion.

The last matchup of the day was Team Secret vs. Vici Gaming which delivered what many thought the best games at the Frankfurt Major so far. We saw a fierce fight for the second slot in the upper bracket final together with an unexpected appearance of Meepo picked by Team Secret. In the end, it was Puppey’s team who prevailed and get to face Evil Geniuses on Friday.

In the lower bracket, we saw the wondrous undergods from Peru, Team Unknown, who eliminated the Chinese team Newbee the day before. Unfortunately, the underdog story ended today as Team Unknown fell to LGD Gaming 0-2.

]]> With the group stage being concluded, the Frankfurt Major has kicked off in full swing yesterday. We saw two upper bracket and four lower bracket matches filled with amazing Dota 2 plays. Some teams have risen, like the two top teams of The International 5, Evil Geniuses and CDEC Gaming, or came back like Alliance. Others, like Fnatic and Cloud9, have fallen and been eliminated.

The main highlight of yesterday’s matches was definitely Team Unknown taking on Newbee. The Peruvians took down the team who won The International 4 in an impressive manner, continuing to write their great underdog story.
