]]> We are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with BBC to broadcast the semifinal and final live matches from the UK’s first Dota 2 major – ESL One Birmingham powered by Intel where top teams from around the world battle for Pro Dota Circuit Points and a US$1,000,000 prize pool.

The corporation’s digital channel, BBC Three, will stream the semifinals at 2pm on Saturday May 26, and grand final at 3pm on Sunday May 27. The live clashes from ESL One will be available to watch online on the BBC Three website and on BBC iPlayer. It will mark the first time that ESL events have been shown live on the BBC, and marks an exciting next step in the growth of esports in the United Kingdom.

BBC Three’s coverage will be fronted by BBC Radio 1 Presenter and vlogger Julia Hardy with professional Dota 2 caster Gareth “Gareth” Bateson and Shane “Shaneomad” Clarke guiding the viewers through the semifinal and final clashes. Alongside showcasing the best Dota 2 teams going up against each other to win the overall prize, there will be interviews with world-class players in attendance so viewers can soak up the atmosphere from one of the world’s biggest and most vibrant esports events.

Here’s everything you need to know about the event.

The three group winners will play a bo1 decider match to determine the first two teams directly qualified for the semifinals. While it was originally considered for the decider to be a bo3, the ability for teams to lose on purpose in the final match to achieve a desired outcome of the decider made us switch to bo1. The team coming in third in this decider will join the three runner-ups from the groups in the quarterfinals.

]]> ESL One Katowice 2018 powered by Intel, Poland’s first ever Dota 2 Major, saw Virtus.pro claiming the champion’s crown, leaving the crowd in absolute awe. The CIS squad will now return home $400,000 richer and with those sweet 750 DPC points on their back! Let’s have a quick look into the journey that Katowice took us to last week!

Group Stage

Right off the bat, Poland’s first Major showed us that this event will be like no other. Vici Gaming dropping Team Liquid to the loser’s bracket and Newbee’s loss to Team Kinguin at the first round, were just some of the upsets that took place during the Group Stage.

Team Kinguin taking down the TI titans Newbee isn’t just a win for the Polish team, but it might also signify the rise of a new dominant force within the worldwide Dota2 scene.

Despite having the odds against them, LGD Gaming dropped former TI winners, Evil Geniuses, down to the loser’s bracket. Despite that setback though, the American squad fought its way through the Group Stage and eventually found itself into the playoffs. 

Who could have thought! Vici Gaming kicking Katowice’s ultimate favorites to the Loser’s bracket. The Chinese squad came into the event with one pure goal: prove everyone why they should still be considered as one of the greatest teams in the world; and they did so after they conquered the second spot at the pedestal!

Talking about surprises, the last day of the Group Stage had nothing to be jealous of the previous days, with the most interesting one being FNATIC’s dominance over Team Secret. Watching FNATIC delivering world class Dota was, simply put, an eye candy!

All in all, watching the Group Stage unfold was a complete blast, packed with action and upsets that ultimately lead in breathtaking moments to remember.

Playoffs

Newbee’s takedown by Evil Geniuses wrapped up the group stage, and thus the clash for the king begun!

Quarterfinals

Team Secret vs Team Liquid 1-2

One of the most anticipated matches of the event, Team Secret vs Team Liquid, kicked off the playoffs, and it was Secret who got to be shown the way out as Liquid prevailed in this Bo3! As it turns out, once again, Meepo is probably not a reliable choice!

Virtus.pro vs Evil Geniuses 2-1

Even though Evil Geniuses showed some signs of improvement, especially during their march over Newbee, they fell short behind Virtus.pro in the second series of the quarterfinals.

Semifinals

Vici Gaming vs Team Liquid 2-1

Off to the semifinals and Vici Gaming found their way through Liquid’s draft, forcing them into the third place decider match. VG’s consistency and strategic thought during this series was out of this world as they managed minute by minute to turn around the games and claim their ticket to the finals.

FNATIC vs Virtus.pro 0-2

Much alike Evil Geniuses, FNATIC has immense improvement since their previous performances and, quite honestly, it was about time! Despite that though, Virtus.pro proved to be a lot stronger than them, resulting in quick two games that sent them straight to the finals to face Vici Gaming!

Third place match

Team Liquid vs FNATIC 2-1

This result was somehow expected. Team Liquid is a colossus and unfortunately for FNATIC the “David vs Goliath” myth didn’t unfold this time, as Team Liquid won the series and finished 3rd, taking home $120,000 and 225 DPC points.

Grand Finals

Vici Gaming vs Virtus.pro 1-3

What once was a dream, now becomes reality. Virtus.pro conquered another ESL Major title, their most recent one being ESL One Hamburg 2017, and with those 750 DPC points, are currently leading the charge over at the Dota Pro Circuit ranking! The CIS squad came into Katowice with sceptic eyes on their back, as they had, quite recently, swapped Lil for Rodjer with Na’Vi, but they proved us all wrong. Not only Rodjer came as a perfect fit for the CIS monsters but also delivered amazing Dota.

Jumping into the games, Virtus.pro established their dominance quite early during the first two games, exhibiting unrivaled strategic minds. They were able to counter VG’s every move and for the most part were always ahead. Into what most of the audience expected to be the last game of the event, Vici Gaming came into Game 3 strong and managed to snatch this one out of the hands of VP within just roughly 27 minutes, thus keeping them alive a little bit longer. Despite their attempts to even out the score though, Virtus.pro didn’t allow VG to take another game, and by taking advantage of VG’s attempts to provide space for Terrorblade, they struck them hard, forced them into fights that they were destined to lose and eventually succumbed them into their third and final loss.

Congratulations to Virtus.pro for clinching their second ESL One trophy in a row! Also, a huge thank you to everyone who tuned in, came to the Spodek arena, all teams, players, and crew – we cannot wait to see you next time!

]]> Less than a week is left before the official start of the ESL One Katowice 2018 powered by Intel group stage, and while we had a look into Group A, let’s put Group B under the microscope. From the looks of it we can look forward to some of the most interesting matches of this Major!

Team Secret

Right off the bat we start with one of the event’s favourites, and honestly, who can deny that. Alongside TI7’s finalists, Team Liquid and Newbee, Team Secret have been performing outstandingly well and are also leading the charge at the Pro Circuit Ranking with over 4000 points. Their barrage of Top 5 place finishes in combination with their incredible 66% win ratio (since last August), comes to prove that they are rightfully amongst the top 3 contenders for this Major!

Infamous

The South American competitive Dota scene is evolving and Infamous are the living proof of this, period. They qualified to ESL One Katowice 2018 after a quick and confident win over their fellow South Americans rivals, SG e-sports. Despite that though, chances are stacked against them in this Major. Not only did they get into the, admittedly, hardest group, but they also got drawn to play against Team Secret right off the bat. Even though this is Dota and upsets happen all the time, it would be really hard for Infamous to outdraft and eventually best Secret.

LGD Gaming

LGD are really strong, yet also really shaky. It feels like even though they have an undoubtedly strong roster with immense individual experience, they fall behind on teamwork, and their barrage of intermediate results, with some short moments of glory, come to prove it. They had three consecutive 8th-10th finishes – Perfect World Masters, MDL Macau and DOTA Summit 8 accordingly- and then out of nowhere they came second in i-League Season 4, succumbing only to TI7 winners, Team Liquid. Taken all of the above into consideration, it is really hard to predict how LGD Gaming will perform in Katowice next week.

Evil Geniuses

I’ll stick with what I said about Evil Geniuses roughly a month ago when they were announced as a direct invite to Genting: “Evil Geniuses is a team with respectable force that has to be reckoned with”. In December 2017 EG underwent a series of roster changes, with the most notable one being UNiVeRsE’s release and the recruitment of Misery as their 5 and new team captain.Changes that have just started to prove their significance. Despite their mediocre finish at Captains Draft 4.0, EG finished 2nd at Galaxy Battles II and 3rd-4th at ESL One Genting 2018, thus proving that they are on the right course in restoring themselves to previous glory. They still have a long way to go through to reach TI5 levels of competitiveness. At their first match in Katowice they are going to go head-to-head with LGD Gaming and immediately after Team Secret will likely be waiting for them, that is in case they both win of course, an obstacle that might prove critical on their way to the playoffs.

Natus Vincere

It has become evident to almost every Dota fan that Na’Vi are trying their best to come back to the foreground. They got a golden medal at the Adrenaline Cyber League and two respectable 4th place finishes at MDL Macau and DreamLeague Season 8, but they are just not quite there yet. Their poor finish over at Genting last month lead to them sending RodjER to Virtus.pro and receiving Lil in exchange while also replacing SoNNeiko with LeBronDota. With this whole fuss taking place just 20 days before Katowice, it is still uncertain as to whether they will be able to fully prepare for what’s coming onto them.

Fnatic

If this was an ideal world, I could have ended my statement about Fnatic with just this phrase: “Fnatic added UNiVeRsE and they are now rocking”. But this is not an ideal world and Fnatic, unfortunately, are still not quite rocking. At least not as much as we would expect them to be. Their barrage of mediocre results during 2017 rung the danger bells, telling them that the roster had to be revamped in order to climb out of these poor performances. Fnatic were missing the link that would bind together the immense experience that they possess, and they quite possibly found it in the face of UNiVeRsE. A decorated veteran, with tons of experience on his back joined the team early on January but up until now they seem like they haven’t found a way to fit it all together. But hope is not lost for Fnatic as this roster has all the ingredients needed for their chemistry to click.

Team Kinguin

Hailing from Poland, Team Kinguin will be the home contenders, the ones who will try to keep the title in Poland! Over the past 7 months they have exhibited a steadily upward trend, with their most notable result being their 3-4th place finish at DOTA Summit 8 and their 5th-6th finish at Perfect World Masters, thus making them a venerable force in EU. Much like compLexity Gaming and Infamous though, they still have a long way to go before they are able to compete at the highest level and go head-to-head against teams like Liquid and Secret. Additionally, the fact that their first match is against Genting’s champions and former TI winners, Newbee, could prove as an early stumbling block.

Newbee

Newbee’s direct invite to Katowice shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Newbee had an impeccable run in 2017 and early 2018, seeing a series of top 5 finishes, which culminated in their golden medal at ESL One Genting 2018. Their win over Team Liquid further solidified their presence, thus making them one of the top 3 contenders for this Major. Taking into consideration the level of gameplay they’ve exhibited over the past year, one might safely assume that they are not far from returning to China with one more top 1 finish on their backs.

]]> ESL One Genting 2018 powered by Intel, Malaysia’s first ever Dota 2 Minor, has come to an end. We had a week of world-class Dota 2 action delivered by 16 teams competing for the coveted trophy, invaluable Pro Circuit points, and a share of the US$400,000 prize pool. In the end, it was Newbee who bested all of their opponents and lifted the ESL One trophy in front of the roaring crowd in the Arena of Stars, after a nail-biting grand final versus Team Liquid.
