]]> Team Secret vanquished Fnatic and CDEC Gaming on their way to the finals, while Vega Squadron went through Evil Geniuses and Invictus Gaming. But who lifted the ESL One trophy in the end?

Grand final – Team Secret vs Vega Squadron

While Team Secret opted for their successful quarterfinal opening of Crystal Maiden and Elder Titan, Vega went old school for game one with the tried and true Tiny-Io combo in the midlane. And w33ha’s Windrunner was not able to do much against the ultra aggressive, unkillable setup in mid. Vega’s incredible early game damage output carried onwards into the mid and late game as the CIS squad never took their foot off the accelerator, always keeping the pressure on the map with Io-Tiny relocates and countless amazing hookshots by Mag’s Clockwerk. In a last ditch effort with two barracks down, EternalEnvy went all out on his Anti-Mage and picked up a Rapier, but it would not be enough to save the day. Almost unchallenged, Vega Squadron took a 1-0 lead in the series.

In their elimination game, Team Secret went all out on comfort picks for their squad. Puppey Enchantress, w33ha Meepo and Pieliedie Bounty Hunter were up against Mag’s feared Broodmother. And Secret got off to an amazing start with all lanes working out in their favor. Meepo was able to bully the midlane while Vega’s aggressive trilane failed and Broodmother was held to a standstill by Misery’s Tusk. And to make it worse for Vega, the Bounty Hunter Track kills allowed Team Secret to snowball out of control even harder. Taking objective after objective, Team Secret relentlessly abused their early advantage and bullied Vega into submission, tying the series back up at 1-1.

After getting stomped by w33ha’s Meepo in game two, Vega banned the pesky geomancer right away in the first banning phase of game three. Secret instead picked up two all new heroes for the final match, the Mirana and Templar Assassin cores. And while Misery was able to secure first blood on his offlane Mirana, it was Vega who set the tone of the game with their early rotations. During the first engagements it was still a very even game with both teams able come away with important skirmish victories. But Vega’s aggression payed off eventually, forcing Team Secret to react to their movements and fight on their terms following countless Mag Clockwerk initiations. Barely being able to leave their base Team Secret managed to sneak a Rosh. but paid dearly for their endeavor, losing three heroes and the Aegis immediately, which paved the way for Vega to take down all their racks and decide the final game in their favor. Vega Squadron are your ESL One at New York Super Week champions!

]]> Four teams. Two Favorites. Two day one upsets. Who had the upper hand in the semifinals of ESL One at New York Super Week?

Semi final #1 – Team Secret vs CDEC Gaming

This series was not one for faint hearted Arachnophobes. Yesterday already gave us a taste of things to come and Team Secret continued to roll with Broodmother picks today. But for the sake of throwing CDEC a curveball, Puppey opted for a complete rarity, an Elder Titan pickup! But it would be all about Misery’s Broodmother in game one, which drew lots of attention to the bot lane early on. And even though he died in the early game, he was able to find his farm and towers with CDEC eventually being unable to lock him down with their lineup, which lead to tower after tower, followed by barracks after barracks and a pretty straight forward first game victory for Team Secret.

Game two and another Broodmother for Misery. If it works once, why shouldn’t it work again for Team Secret. And while the Brood pick was effective yet again, Secret had a much harder time in game two against the Invoker and Bristleback on CDEC’s side. The Chinese managed to fend off Team Secret for the longest time, raking up a lot of gold in the process thanks to Bounty Hunter’s Track to give them a chance at a comeback. But all it needed at the end was a clutch refresher Reaper’s Scythe by EternalEnvy to allow Team Secret to go for an incredibly quick base raze with two heroes out of the picture for 50+ seconds. In the end CDEC put up and admirable fight, but the fact that they let Broodmother through the banning phase twice in a row came back to haunt them.

Final Score: Team Secret 2-0 CDEC Gaming

Semi final #1 – Invictus Gaming vs Vega Squadron

After seeing the games from Secret earlier today, as well as Mag’s performances yesterday, Invictus Gaming learned from the countrymen’s mistakes and banned Broodmother in the first banning phase right away, all the while going for the first Sven pick of the tournament. And with loads of burst damage at their disposal mostly thanks to their Skywrath Mage and Doom, iG eventually came out ahead after a back and forth start to the game. And the longer the game went on, the more apparent iG’s teamfight advantage became as the Chinese managed to win huge team fights in succession, ultimately leaving Vega with no other choice than to call GG.

In the spirit of 6.85 we got to see a bunch of new picks in game two from Vega Squadron, who opted for a Beastmaster and Ursa against iG’s aggressive Undying and Venomancer combo. And Mag’s Beastmaster flourished in the offlane, grabbing an early Necrobook to seize complete control of the map and early teamfights. Even with Venomancers wards iG were unable to leave their base for most of the game due to Vega’s overwhelming teamfight power and map control. With a gem in hand, the CIS squad patiently furthered their advantage, farming the entire map and getting pick off after pick off before finally breaching high ground and taking game two in their favor in an incredibly one sided affair.

Even though Mag’s Beastmaster was hugely successful in game two, iG did not choose to ban Mag’s hero in game three. And if you don’t ban the Beastmaster, you essentially get a redo of game two with map control being completely handed over the Vega. All it took was a few successful team fights early on for Vega to completely run over iG. They even managed to pull off three successive team wipes during their spell of utter dominance during which the Chinese completely lost their grip on the game and their hopes of making it to the finals. Hopefully Team Secret have been paying attention as Broodmother and Beastmaster are bound to become highly contested picks in the grand finals against Vega

Final Score: Invictus Gaming 1-2 Vega Squadron

]]> The first day of action at ESL One at New York Super Week saw tons of refreshing new Dota 2 strategies on the new 6.85 patch. Check out what went down in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Quarterfinal #1 – Team Secret vs Fnatic

Both Team Secret and Fnatic have changed a lot since TI5, with only Puppey remaining with Team Secret and Fnatic retaining just Mushi and Ohaiyo. So a lot of eyes were on the new additions to the respective teams and especially DJ, Fnatic’s new offlaner, immediately put his stamp on the series in game one with his tone setting Tusk. And while the first game gave us a lot of well known 6.84 meta heroes like Leshrac, Phantom Lancer, Shadow Fiend and of course Tusk, we also got a taste of fresh air in the picking phase thanks to Fnatic picking up an unusual Omniknight. Paired with the Tusk, the combination proved highly effective in Fnatic’s game one victory over Team Secret, which was set in motion by a timely Rosh snatch, swinging the favor towards Fnatic, ultimately leaving Team Secret unable to recover.

On the brink of elimination, Team Secret opted for some 6.85 experimenting for game two. Io, Necrophos, Nyx, Bane, Meepo. What else can you say about that lineup aside from “Thank you Icefrog”? Thanks to the newest patch, Team Secret went back to an old strategy of theirs, the aggressive Io – Necrophos combo while giving w33ha his signature crowd-pleasing Meepo. The unkillable Necro and stack-stealing Meepo just straight up overran Fnatic, who opted for questionable cores with a position one Leshrac and mid Outworld Devourer, both of which had next to no impact on the game. With map control completely in Team Secret’s favor, Fnatic was quickly pushed into their own base and had to call GG early on, tying up the series 1-1.

In the spirit of the new patch, game three also had a few surprise picks in tow for us, including Alchemist, Broodmother and Venomancer for Team Secret while Fnatic went for the second Necrophos pick of the series. But Mushi and company were not prepared for EternalEnvy’s selfless Alchemist, who ended up handing out two Aghanim’s Scepters and a bottle to his teammates, propelling Puppey’s support Venomancer to highest net worth in the game. In the face of this huge gold deficit, Fnatic lost all grip on the game, allowing Team Secret to run away with their lead, eventually securing the series in their favor.

Final Score: Team Secret 2-1 Fnatic

Quarterfinal #2 – Team Archon vs CDEC Gaming

Our second quarterfinal of the day saw Team Archon (formerly Team Fire) face up against TI5 second place CDEC Gaming. A tough matchup for the North American who were the clear underdog coming into the series. Game one proved to be a clear clash of styles. While CDEC remained true to their 6.84 draft strategies aside from a Sniper pick, Archon aimed to utilize the element of surprise by drafting a team Nyx, Doom, Medusa and most interestingly of all, a roaming support Chaos Knight. But what sounded exciting on paper only truly yielded results in the early game. The longer the game dragged on, the less effective the CK smoke ganks became, while CDEC amassed a huge gold lead on the back of their Bounty Hunter track kills. With no real pressure on them, the Chinese used their advantage patiently, slowly breaking down Archon’s high ground without taking many risks and thereby securing game one for themselves.

It was more of the same for CDEC in game two, who remained faithful to their Lina – Gyro – Bounty Hunter lineup while Archon tried to get creative with a Drow aura strat with four ranged heroes plus and Earthshaker. Team Archon got off to an aggressive start, jumping ahead in kills quickly, but just like in game one, CDEC had a Bounty Hunter to fall back on, which allowed them to be behind in total kills but stay level in farm nonetheless. With Archon not being able to press their early advantage, it was CDEC who managed to breach high ground and win successive team fights, leading to easy objective which would allow them to close out the series after just two games.

Final Score: Team Archon 0-2 CDEC Gaming

Quarterfinal #3 – Virtus.Pro vs Invictus Gaming

Taking a page from some of the earlier games, we got to see another Chaos in game one, but this time as a one position for Virtus.Pro, while iG picked up yet another Alchemist. But be it support or carry, Chaos Knight still comes off as pretty underwhelming at this level of play. Essentially, Chuan as a Rubick was able to get more use out of CK’s abilities than Illidan himself. In the end it was pretty much the Chuan show, who managed to even steal Bounty Hunter’s track to turn the tables on VP. On the back of patient team fights and objective gaming, Invictus Gaming closed out game one without much trouble.

Game two was pretty much the completely opposite and a complete runaway game for Virtus.Pro. The role one Slardar and Undying core did not work out at all for iG, while Illidan’s Luna was able to snowball out of control. Thanks to strong ganks on Ferrari_430’s Shadow Fiend, the CIS squad took an early item advantage and bullied all the team fights from that point on, never letting up with their aggression and perfectly pushing their advantage. After a one sided game in which VP completely outmaneuvered iG, the series got pulled back to even terms.

Those hoping for a more even game between these teams were about to be disappointed yet again, as game three was as much a snowballing affair as the previous two games. iG’s Brewmaster and Night Stalker set the tone for game three and never took the foot off the accelerator, baiting Virtus.Pro into drawn out teamfight where the Chinese managed to pick them off one by one. The advantage got so big that iG even dove past tier four towers to team wipe VP and came out completely unscathed. Thus Invictus Gaming cement their spot in the second semi final against the winner of Evil Geniuses vs Vega Squadron.

Final Score: Virtus.Pro 1-2 Invictus Gaming

Quarterfinal #4 – Vega Squadron vs Evil Geniuses

It would almost be an understatement to say that everybody was waiting to see Evil Geniuses perform in the final series of the day, in the wake of their TI5 victory and re-acquiry of Arteezy. But it would be Vega Squadron who would seize the opportunity on the big stage of Madison Square Garden Theatre to make a name for themselves. The CIS team that barely missed out on TI5 stayed together nonetheless and it payed off against a lackluster EG. Two games in a row, Vega drafted themselves an offlane Broodmother and two games in a row, Mag caused boundless issues for the North Americans, who consistently lost the battle for map control against the aggressive Vega Squadron. According to this series, consistency trumps roster changes and we can’t wait to see Vega go up against iG in the semis.

Final Score: Vega Squadron 2-0 Evil Geniuses

]]> There are a lot of new names to get used to in the North American Dota 2 scene in the wake of TI5, be it new players or newly formed teams. But in almost every new squad on the block you’ll find some of NA’s most accomplished players, such as Fluffnstuff and Jeyo of Team Fire, who secured their trip to ESL One at New York Super Week by being triumphant in the wild North American qualifiers.

In a qualifier bracket filled with the new teams including the likes of Demon, Aui_2000, 1437, Wagamama and swindle, Team Fire put in some commanding performances to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. Directly invited into the quarterfinals, they brushed aside Root Gaming, Digital Chaos and Complexity Gaming in the grand finals, only dropping a single game to DC on the way to the guaranteed slot at the Madison Square Garden Theater, where two of their players will make their second ESL One appearance.

The former Sneaky Nyx Assassins squad, which was rebranded to Team Fire at the end of 2014, only has two players left over from their ESL One New York 2014 run – the support duo of Fluffnstuff and `whitebeard. The former seems to be following in pieliedie’s footsteps of playing as a role six support, ending nearly every game with virtually no farm. However, it’s hard to argue with the strategy when it’s clearly working out in the team’s favor. Another thing that could benefit the feisty Americans is the fact that none of the other seven teams have any experience playing against them, which gives them a certain element of surprise. They may be coming in as an underdog, but it would be foolish to underestimate them.

]]> ESL One at New York Super Week’s fourth and final regional qualifier concluded yesterday and has given us yet another Dota 2 giant to compete at the Madison Square Garden Theater. EHOME have battled through a thoroughly stacked Chinese single elimination bracket against some of the strongest and most iconic teams in the scene – check out the Chinese qualifier bracket!

Three teams that finished in the top half at The International 5 and a former TI and ESL One winner. LGD, iG, VG and EHOME. As a semifinal. In a qualifier. What a lineup! With CDEC Gaming having been invited directly to New York, the without a doubt strongest Chinese teams left in the pool put on a real show for us this week, with their eyes fixed on that coveted final qualifier slot for ESL One at New York Super Week.

None of the teams left the post-TI shuffle period unscathed, but even though EHOME underwent arguably the most dramatic changes with three new team members, the legendary Dota 2 team continued their high-flying form in the new season by getting revenge on Vici Gaming in the semis for their defeat in Seattle during TI5. In their following grand final series against Invictus Gaming, former HGT player and new EHOME acquisition Kaka was able to show of his stellar Io play for two games in a row before iG banned the hero, which cost the ESL One Frankfurt 2014 champions the series and swung the momentum in favor of EHOME, who took home the qualifier slot (no pun intended) with a decisive 3-1 victory.

Now that EHOME are set for New York, we have confirmed all eight teams who will be competing for the US$250,000 prize pool and the trophy that goes with it.

]]> Fnatic are the first team who weren’t directly invited to the event to qualify for ESL One at New York Super Week through the SEA region qualifiers. After a thrilling and hard-fought five-game series, the new-look Fnatic team managed to beat out MVP.Phoenix 3-2 to punch their coveted ticket to New York. In order to come this far, Mushi and Ohaiyo surrounded themselves with new talent in the wake of The International 5, namely Black^, Net and promising Filipino youngster DJ.

After their suboptimal performances at ESL One Frankfurt 2015 and The International 5, it became obvious that the team needed to undergo some drastic changes to keep up with the best teams in the world. The fact that they emerged victorious over MVP.Phoenix in the ESL One at New York Super Week qualifiers already shows their rapid improvement. The Koreans managed to finish top eight at The International 5 after all, and were by no means an easy opponent to get past. However, DJ especially – the youngest and most unproven player on the new Fnatic squad – was able to shine in the offlane during the qualifiers, also thanks to all the attention Mushi attracted in the mid lane.

“Space created” could very well be the motto of the new Fnatic squad. As one of the most accomplished mid players in the scene, Mushi constantly gets pressured and ganked in the mid lane while Fnatic’s other lanes often don’t have to deal with heavily contested matchups. This comes as a huge benefit to DJ and especially Black^, who is known to be one of the most efficient farmers the game has ever seen and who doesn’t even need to fight the enemy team to win a game single handedly. Even as the SEA region’s strongest team, Fnatic don’t get too many chances to compete against the world’s best, so most of their opponents at ESL One at New York Super Week will not be very familiar with their playstyle and vice versa. ]]> Seeded into the first round of the European ESL One at New York Super Week main qualifier, Vega Squadron managed to beat the odds and come out on top of the stacked EU bracket, brushing aside the likes of NiP, Na’Vi and Monkey Freedom Fighters. With their trip to New York secured, ESL One will be new territory for all five of the Vega lineup.

The stable CIS roster avoided any changes to their roster, even after failing to qualify to The International 5 through the wildcard stages. Looking at the big shuffles that ensued after each TI, it’s quite a big sign of trust by the Russian organization and shows that they are willing to give the squad time to gel and get in form for the inaugural start of the majors. The fact that their players are already on the same page and don’t need an experimental phase ahead of the new season probably puts them ahead of many of the newly formed teams in the European scene – as the qualifier results show.

While a few of Vega’s players’ names may not yet ring a bell in many Dota 2 fans’ minds as they are just starting to make a name for themselves, Mag~ and Solo are already widely known and accomplished players. The two of them have each played on more than ten different Dota 2 teams in their careers so far – including the likes of Team Empire, Virtus.pro and Rox.Kis – and are true CIS mercenaries of the highest caliber. So far, it seems that they have found a team that is willing to put in the time to create a new Eastern European Dota 2 force to be reckoned with.

Fellow CIS team Virtus.pro are pretty much the only team Vega have had experience against aside from the TI5 wildcard final against CDEC Gaming. So, similar to Fnatic and CDEC, their opponents will have to adjust on the fly or watch a lot of replays to prepare to face the Eastern European up-and-comers.

]]> We are now just two weeks away from the start of ESL One at New York Super Week and the regional qualifiers are finishing up. The North American qualifier finals concluded last night, and it was Team Fire who were victorious against TI5 participants Complexity Gaming – you can check out the full qualifier bracket in the graphic below.

For those not familiar with Team Fire, the North Americans are actually the rebranded Sneaky Nyx Assassins squad that managed to qualify for ESL One New York in 2014. Since then, the team has undergone quite a few roster changes, but Fluffnstuff and whiteBeard will be making their second ESL One appearances and are looking to get past the quarterfinals.

This time around Cloud9 won’t be standing in their way, as they lost out to Digital Chaos in the qualifiers, who in turn got beaten by Team Fire. The latter series was the only one where Fire dropped a single game. The finals were a 3-0 affair versus compLexity Gaming, but aside from the first game, the series was a lot closer than the score indicates as the two teams were part of one of the longest games in history – a 91-minute dogfight where neither team wanted to give an inch until Fire finally managed to take the commanding lead in the series.

Now that we’ve confirmed the second North American team for ESL One at New York Super Week, only the Chinese qualifiers remain.
