]]> Will we see a new organization break through the Chinese scene at ESL One Manila? Alright, Wings Gaming aren’t a new organization, to be fair, but they certainly haven’t had the chance to really make a name for themselves yet. That could change with ESL One Manila just around the corner. For a team that only rarely gets to go up against non-Chinese opponents, this will be a true test of strength.

They have already shown that they are not to be underestimated in the ESL One Manila Chinese qualifiers. In a by-no-means-easy bracket, they not only vanquished both ViCi Gaming squads as well as iG Vitality but also straight up crushed them. The best-of-five finals against fy’s VG Reborn especially were a showcase of utter domination in a clear-cut 3-0. If they can replicate this level of play at ESL One Manila, they will most certainly have a good chance at advancing through the group stages and beyond.

In Group A, they will be challenged by Team Liquid, compLexity and Mineski. Liquid and coL are already being touted as hot favorites to advance out of this group, but considering that Wings have managed to best Liquid recently at StarLadder, this may not be such an open-and-shut case. They will most definitely bring a different style of play to the table as one of the few teams to not utilize Earth Spirit during this patch and instead sometimes featuring lesser-seen heroes like Treant Protector and core Venomancer. Will their opponents be prepared for their unique playstyle?

The Chinese haven’t had a great showing in Minsk, but they have surely gathered invaluable intel to help them prepare for ESL One Manila – let’s see if it’ll pay off.

]]> New and old faces. It’s hard to believe, but with EHOME securing a direct invite to ESL One Manila, the legendary Chinese organization will only now be making their first ever ESL One appearance. However, it won’t be the first time for all of their players. EHOME have acquired the two-time ESL One participants iceiceice and Fenrir, who recently parted ways with ViCi Gaming after a long stint. This move added a significant amount of individual skill to the team to compensate for the loss of Kaka and Cty, with the latter being one of the most feared and respected mid and carry players in the Chinese scene.

Interestingly enough, the addition of the two former ESL One New York winners would mean that iceiceice would undergo a role change – a switch from his notorious offlane to support – with LaNm taking over the carry role. Considering that iceiceice has always been regarded as one of the most influential offlaners in Dota together with the likes of Universe, everybody’s eyes will surely be on eLeVeN, who is taking the reins in the offlane over the Singaporean. No doubt iceiceice will be more than capable in his role-four position, but one does have to wonder if EHOME is missing out on his full potential and experience.

However, he isn’t the only one adjusting to a new in-game role. EHOME captain and one of China’s most successful support players LaNm is taking his talents to the safe lane, but this time with farm priority. It’ll be interesting to find out if this assembly of great players can unleash their full potential in their new team and roles. Their first chance will come in group B, where EHOME will face none other than Team Secret, Fnatic and Team Empire – a tough task for any team. Only two teams can advance from this group – will EHOME be one of them?

Aside from select competitions, EHOME have been keeping to the Chinese scene in recent months, with exceptions such as the Shanghai Major and the MarsTV Dota 2 League. This is why the only recent games they have played against their future ESL One Manila opponents have been with their pre-shuffle roster, which did not yet include iceiceice and Fenrir. This essentially makes it very hard to predict how they’ll match up over the coming weekend.

]]> Joining our group of first time ESL One participants at ESL One Manila this year will be none other than compLexity. The NA organisation has been on the rise lately, securing very respectable, almost surprising finishes in recent competitions. They are a very polarizing team, in no small reason due to their captain Kyle “swindlemelonzz” Freedman, whose confident and outspoken persona very much parts the Dota 2 fanbase. But it have been his supporters that have had the last laugh as of late, seeing as how well his team has been performing and we’re excited to welcome them in Manila.

But first and foremost, we can’t go without mentioning their run in the Shanghai Major. Everyone remembers the panel segment between 2GD and Swindlezz, where nobody really took his comments about the rise of the NA and SEA scene seriously, only to see teams from those regions finish in 3rd to 6th place, including coL’s 5th/6th place finish. What is even more remarkable about coL’s run in particular, is the fact that they had to start out immediately in the lower bracket, playing only do-or-die games, including two best-of-ones, yet still achieving such a high placement.

There haven’t been too many chances for them to test themselves since then aside from Dota Pit Season 4, where they had to take a backseat to the team of the moment, MVP Phoenix. But now in Manila they have another shot to prove to the world that not only is NA on the rise, but that compLexity is leading the charge. It’ll be interesting to find out which teams come out strongest after the recent shuffles and the playing field at ESL One Manila will give us a first glimpse into exactly that, with so many top tier teams from around the globe present.

Starting off the tournament, compLexity have been handed a group with Team Liquid, Wings Gaming and Mineski. Team Liquid might be a tough nut to crack for them looking at their 0-2 loss at the Shanghai Major, but the general consensus is that they nonetheless have a great chance to advance to the semi finals, be it in first or second place. Their matchup against Wings will be particularly interesting though, as the teams have never before and it could very well tip the balance in group A.

]]> It’s hard to believe it, but after three years of ESL One competition it’s actually our first chance to welcome Team Empire to the big stage in Manila and see them in action live! As one of the longest standing and most well known Russian organizations, they have been a constant presence in the European Dota 2 scene, but in the past have had to take a back seat to Na’Vi, Virtus Pro and Vega Squadron when it came to qualifying for ESL One events.

Coming into ESL One Manila as the EU qualifier winners, Team Empire have been drawn into an exceptionally tough group. Their group B consists of Team Secret, EHOME and Fnatic – nothing but big names. But that’s certainly no reason to give up hope, considering Team Secret and EHOME both recently underwent roster changes and you can never predict how those will translate into each team’s ‘first’ LAN experience.

And this is a perfect segue into Team Empire’s complete roster overhaul. At this stage, all five of Team Empire’s post-TI5 players have moved on to different teams in the CIS region, leaving Team Empire with no other option but to cultivate some new talent to tackle all their upcoming challenges. Charged with that task will be Scandal, who has a rich, almost two-year history with the organization from back in the days when Dota 2 first started. He has now returned to his old mid lane stomping ground without missing a beat. As the only player with long-standing tournament experience, he will be asked to lead the team in their ESL One Manila challenge.

Considering the drastic roster changes after the Shanghai Major, Team Empire don’t really have a valuable track record against their ESL One Manila opponents. The only team they encountered recently was Team Liquid on two occasions, but each time with their old squad. This makes it difficult to predict their matchups, and we can’t wait to find out if they can turn that unpredictability and underdog role to their advantage.
